REMEMBER YOUR MAGNESIUM -
A common question over the past few weeks has revolved around calcium and bone health. I have seen a wide range of women in particular these past 3 weeks who have been diagnosed with varying degrees of bone loss at varying ages. For several others I have discovered bone loss during our initial workup here. Since the media seems to be placing such a large emphasis on osteoporosis and the importance of calcium let me assist in creating some balance in this matter. I have seen a recent TV commercial speaking on calcium for the prevention of osteoporosis as well as seeing foods now being fortified with calcium, let alone Tums. You may be unaware of a basic truth in physiology - the body keeps calcium and magnesium in balance. When you increase one without the other, your body simple disposes the excess. Cornell Medical Center recently did a study and concluded that 60 - 70 % of American women are magnesium deficient. Oh great, one more thing to worry about. Well no. First, be certain that calcium/magnesium levels do not get too high. Elevated levels will lead to diarrhea. A healthy response to rid a potentially unhealthy situation. For those not on a yeast free diet whole grain breads are rich in the essentials. For all of us eating leafy vegetables, kale, broccoli, tofu, soybeans, raw cheese, raw milk (pasteurized, homogenized and chemicalized has it just not as great a quality amongst the many other benefits of raw) and yogurt are good choices when looking to achieve proper balance. Calcium is not only important for the health of our bones and teeth it is also important for the transmission of nerve impulses, muscular contraction and relaxation. These are functions directly relating to the effectiveness of your Chiropractic care. So keep your calcium/magnesium balance. It will assist in your establishing inner balance and harmony and assist your body in holding your adjustments.
