For years I suffered with Asthma. I had difficulty breathing at night and struggled playing the games I loved most: baseball, football and tennis. My dream was to pitch in the major leagues, but there was no way I could keep up with my fellow teammates during wind sprints. Doctor after doctor, and many emergency room visits later, I was told there was no cure, but they could control my asthma with medicine. I was up to three inhalers a day by the time I was in high school. There just had to be an answer for me! Medicine barely kept me breathing, and I had no quality of life. I began a journey to look within myself to find a solution. The body had to work within some natural laws, and I was determined to find the answer to life's secrets.
My journey into the connection of mind and body
Upon graduating from high school I pursued a BS in Psychology from The American University in Washington D.C. There began my journey into the connection of mind and body. My extensive research in the field of Physiological Psychology won me a rare appointment at the prestigious Neuropsychology Laboratory of the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. There I became a published author in the area of brain function and human behavior.
In my quest for a deeper understanding of how the body works and the integration of neurology, physiology, consciousness, and healing, I entered a doctoral program in Neuropsychology at City University of New York in the fall of 1977. I sustained a serious injury to my neck and lower back causing two herniated discs while I was in graduate school. After 2 years of medical care and physical therapy without much relief my medical doctors recommended I undergo spinal fusion surgery for my neck and lower back. At the age of 22, I simply could not see that as my future.
From research in the field of Physiology to Chiropractic...
As my herniated discs began to heal under chiropractic care, I noticed my breathing had also improved. I realized that I was able to use my inhalers less and less until one day, I noticed my asthma was cured! I knew then that I had to change careers and follow my heart and become a Chiropractor. I left my promising research career and doctoral program to attend the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, graduating Cum Laude in 1985.
My chiropractic education did not end there. I continued to pursue training in holistic health, acupuncture, nutrition, mind body medicine, functional neurology and spinal biomechanics. I attended Emperors College of Traditional Oriental Medicine in Santa Monica, and Asian American University in San Diego.
Outside the office
Currently I continue to pursue my passion in the field of consciousness, health and healing through my work at the University of Santa Monica, anticipating my Masters Degree in Spiritual Psychology in September 2012. In my free time I enjoy the outdoors, cooking vegetarian, learning how to play drums and spending quality time with my son, Ian.
